Platinum Bar Sizes

Platinum bars, similar to gold and silver bars, are produced in both gram and troy oz weights. Bar sizes range from being hardly big enough to see, all the way up to pieces that are heavy enough to feel quite hefty in your hand.

Gram Platinum Bars

Most smaller gram pieces are produced by PAMP Suisse or Credit Suisse, and are contained in CertiCards, which are tamper-proof plastic cases that protect your platinum and include an assay number certifying the purity of the bar.

Below you can see an example 5 gram PAMP platinum bar encased in its CertiCard:

For your reference, the platinum bar above has dimensions of 23.2mm x 14.3mm x 1.3mm, so you can get a sense of the size of that weighted piece. By keeping your platinum bars in their original encasements, you can assure future buyers that your metal is authentic and pure.

Common gram platinum bar sizes include:

  • 1 Gram
  • 5 Gram

Unlike gram gold bars, there isn’t much selection when it comes to gram platinum bars.

Troy Ounce Platinum Bars

Troy ounce platinum bars offer a little more selection than their gram equivalents, as the vast majority of platinum bars in the market are produced in troy ounce sizes. Troy ounce platinum bars are produced by quite a few different manufacturers, including PAMP Suisse, Credit Suisse, Engelhard, and Johnson Matthey.

Below you can see an example of a 1 troy oz platinum bar produced by Johnson Matthey:

Some ounce bars come encased in CertiCards, while others (like the above) ship loose with separate assay certificates. The bar shown above has dimensions of 41mm x 24mm x 2.3mm.

Common ounce platinum bar sizes include:

  • 1 Troy Oz
  • 10 Troy Oz

We recommend buying the largest platinum bars you can afford, as the more you spend the closer you’ll stay to spot price. For example, buying 1 10 troy oz platinum bar would be cheaper than buying 10 1 troy oz platinum bars.

The reason for this is that most bars have similar fabrication costs, regardless of size, so 10 oz bars cost much less to produce per oz than 1 oz bars.

The bar sizes listed above can be found at most online platinum dealers.
